The
Department of Justice (DOJ) on Thursday said self-confessed hitman and former
police officer SP03 Arthur Lascañas might be seeking asylum in the Netherlands,
and protection under communist leader Jose Maria Sison.
Last
month, Lascañas left the Philippines for Singapore, but reports said he again
left Singapore for Qatar on May 28th. Qatar’s immigration record says
Lascañas left Doha in June 8 onboard the The Hague flight.
Lascañas,
Edgar Matobato, Rep. Gary Alejano, and Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV filed criminal
cases against President Duterte at International Criminal Court at The Hague,
but it was not clear if the group actually went there.
DOJ
also received reports that the police officer on the run was seen visiting
National Democratic Front (NDF) founder Jose Maria Sison last week.
“There
is a big possibility that Joma is protecting Lascañas in The Netherlands. He
don’t have any resources unless some powerful people like Sison is protecting
him, or someone from the Philippines is sending him money”, DOJ spokesman Atty.
Ligaya Salmingo told reporters this morning.
DOJ
Secretary Vitaliano Aguirre has already asked Interpol to hunt Lascañas, but it
might be difficult to arrest him if he is indeed in the Netherlands where the
Philippines has no extradition treaty with.
Lascañas
is wanted to killing Davao reporter Jun Pala, but Duterte’s critics, especially
Trillanes, accuses the president of being the mastermind of Pala’s killing. /Jun Salgado/
