Independence Day, June 12, 2017 – Manila | The radical students of the University of the Philippines started the opening of the class with a protest.

On Monday, several student organizations from the University of the Philippines – Manila stage protest in front of Oblation, asking the school’s management to abolish the College’s entrance exam – a test considered to be one of the toughest entrance exams in the country.

League of the Filipino Students (LFA) assistant secretary general Tiburcio Nepumuceno said many of their comrades failed to enter UP because of the difficult entrance exam.

“Ang nangyayari kasi, masyado nilang pinahihirapan ang entrance exam. Marami sa mga kasama naming aktibista ang hindi makapasa. Parang pinipili lang nila kasi ang matatalino. Paano naman kami na mahihirap pag di nakapasa e di rin makapasok] What happens here is they make the exam more difficult. Many of us failed to pass. They seem to pick the smarter ones.  What will happen to us poor students if we cannot pass, we can’t study”, Nepumuceno said.

Nepumuceno added that since it is a government school, there should be no admission test.

College Editor’s Guild of the Philippines (CEGP) member Adrenaline Cruz aired the same thing.

“We are iskolar ng bayan. Dapat wala nang exam exam. Paano naman yong mga kasama naming hindi makapasa, mawawalan sila ng kinabukasan. Meron namang private para sa matatalino at mayayaman, e di dun na lang sila mag-aral,[We are government scholars. There should be no exam. Some of us who fail to pass will have no future. There are private schools for rich and smart students. They should go there],” Cruz said.

The student activists plans to stay in front of the Oblation until 6PM today.

The school’s management has yet to issue their side regarding the unlikely demand of the student activists.

The Japanese government has decided to donate 26,000 tons of construction materials to the Philippines to help rehabilitate the war-torn Marawi City, Japanese newspaper Asian Nikkie said.

M/V Hirata, a government-owned cargo ship assigned under Japan Self Defense Force (JSDF) left the Port of Nagoya on Friday morning, carrying 26,000 tons of cement, steel, lumber, and other light construction materials, is expected to sail for 14 days in open sea until she reach Port of Zamboanga on June 23
.

On June 1, Japan stated it can only provide humanitarian aid when the government offensive is over, but because of the immediate need of construction materials, and the time it takes to deliver the goods, the country decided to send the materials in advance.

China on the other hand said it will donate 15,000 tons of reinforced concrete and galvanized steel sheets to the Philippines following reports of massive damage caused by military airstrikes in Mindanao.

Since the Philippines is not asking for any military aid, the two Asian countries said they can only provide rehabilitation help.

Although Japan and China, two of the most powerful Asian countries, have their own rifts on East China Sea, Chinese Minister of Public Works said both countries are setting aside differences to focus on helping the needy Philippines.

South Korea is also sending food, bottled water, and medicines according to latest report from Arirang TV. /Janeth Carpio/
