Mobile
phone giant manufacturer Nokia is reportedly buying specific old mobile phone
models to recover rare precious metals inside, a Gizmodo report said on Monday.
According
to the report, specific phone models 3210, 5110, and 3310 have IC (integrated
circuits) that has palladium content. The company wants to recover such
precious metal after world market announced that the price of palladium has
almost doubled recently.
Nokia
did not release an estimate as to how many old phones out there to recover, but
the report said that in the Philippines alone, the company is eyeing to recover
at least ---- of the said precious metal.
The
report also said that only Finland-made Nokia old phones are subject for
recall. China-made phones used different ICs without palladium, the report
said.
There
is no specific details about the buying price of old phones, but Gizmodo estimates at least P1,000 per phone, working or not-working. /Benjie Calibre/
