4 of 10 PNPA entrants want to be a police officer to get rich, survey says

Getting admitted at the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA), in Cavite is not an easy task, but the main reason why students wanted to enter the academy and become police officers is shocking.

In a recent career orientation and survey conducted by the Colleges and Universities Guild of the Philippines (CUGP), four out of ten freshmen students of the prestigious police academy said they wanted to be a police officer to get rich – a somewhat shocking answer.

Halil Halimahim, a freshmen from Midsayap, Cotabato said the he came from a very poor family and joining police is the only way to become rich.

“Syempre pag nasa posisyon ka na, magagawa mo na lahat. Madaling kontrolin ang lahat halimbawa pag hepe ka ng bayan”, Halimahim said.

At least 180 students participated the survey, and most of them did not give their names, but the result says almost 40% of the respondents have the same reason with Halimahim.

The Philippine National Police (PNP), has recently labelled as the most corrupt government agency in the country after hundreds of police officers were involved in illegal drugs and other illegal activities.

Perhaps the reason why there are so many corrupt police officers are clear now. /Sammy Montalbo/
